Attending preschool helps young children foster early learning and social development. In the outskirts of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the lack of a local preschool means that young children do not receive a formal education until the age of 6.
In order to support the local community, Handicaps Solidaires Luxembourg, together with its local partner Fondation l'Hyme aux Enfants Burkina Faso, have been working to improve educational and health outcomes in Ouagadougou and its outskirts by building a children's primary school and care centre to support sick children since 2018.
Through the construction of an inclusive preschool furthers this work by creating opportunities for formal education further upstream. As an inclusive environment, it allows for 90 children, including those with illnesses or mild disabilities to be supported as they attend school. Moreover, the further development of local education infrastructure enables mothers to seek employment and help support their families while their children are at school. By expanding opportunities for local children to receive an education, Handicaps Solidaires Luxembourg is helping ensure their learning and social development for the longterm.
