Identification and Analysis of Risk Factors in Heart Transplant Recipients

This project is led by Priv.-Doz. Dr Fabrice Darche and Prof. Dr Rasmus Rivinius, professors at the University Hospital Heidelberg (Germany) and cardiologists at the Centre Cardiologique Esch. Its aim is to improve the medical follow-up and survival of heart transplant recipients through the acquisition of new scientific knowledge.

Scientific Context

The project is based on the creation of a detailed database on heart transplant recipients, an essential prerequisite for identifying the risk factors that influence their outcomes. Due to the limited number of donors, clinical studies in this field are often hindered by a small patient population. The University Hospital Heidelberg, as one of the leading heart transplant centers in Germany, provides the ideal conditions for this data collection.

Importance for Luxembourg

The University Hospital Heidelberg regularly treats Luxembourgish patients suffering from heart failure, both before and after transplantation. Since Luxembourg and the neighboring German states (Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate) do not have a heart transplant center, Heidelberg is the closest option. The project therefore contributes not only to scientific progress, but also to strengthening cooperation between Luxembourg and Heidelberg, ensuring optimal care and follow-up for Luxembourgish patients requiring a heart transplant.
