Promoting a sustainable investment approach

The Fondation de Luxembourg believes in aligning a foundation’s investments with its philanthropic mission and the charitable causes it is supporting. For this reason, we launched in 2009 a SRI (Socially Responsible Investment) policy, which has now been revised.

The Fondation de Luxembourg follows for the investment of its own endowment the guidelines enshrined in its SRI Policy,  ensuring that these investments are made within a socially responsible framework.

Since our creation, we have actively engaged in discussions with the banking sector about how to reinforce the sustainable dimensions of the investment portfolios of the foundations under our aegis. When a donor comes to us to create a new foundation, we consistently recommend the adoption of our SRI policy with regard to the future management of the endowment of their foundation.

In order to further strengthen our sustainable investment approach, we recently updated our SRI policy to adapt to the most recent developments in the field.

Three new pillars have been integrated into our policy:

-       United Nations Principles for Responsible Investments (UN_PRI)

The six Principles for Responsible Investment are a voluntary and aspirational set of investment principles that offer a menu of possible actions for incorporating ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) issues into investment practice.

-       Focus sectors

In addition to excluding certain sectors such as the armaments, the pornography and the tobacco industries, the Fondation de Luxembourg takes a positive approach favoring investments in companies that are able to demonstrate a positive ESG impact, as well as their commitments to making a meaningful contribution to the UN_SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals).

-       Strengthening together with our partners their SRI capabilities

The Fondation de Luxembourg works with external investment managers (mainly banks and

asset managers based in Luxembourg) for the management of its endowment. Our aim is to promote an active and coherent approach to SRI among our partners and the selection

of investment managers includes a review of their capabilities in terms of SRI, taking into account amongst others their internal expertise and resources and their screening approach.
