Engaging families in philanthropy across generations - 22.11.2023

Reporting from the Philanthropy Adviser Event held on November 22nd, 2023.

History’s largest transfer of wealth is currently underway, representing $15 trillion passing on to the next generation. Philanthropic projects are part of this transfer, with personal passion adding a layer of complexity. The good news is that family philanthropic projects can thrive across generations, a topic that was covered in the latest Philanthropy Adviser Event, hosted by the Fondation de Luxembourg and attended by senior wealth advisers and bankers.

With extensive experience working with business families, guest speaker Alexis du Roy de Blicquy, CEO of the Family Business Network (FBN), offered his insights on how families can face the complexities of this transition, and how with the right approach, philanthropic projects can bring families closer together around a common purpose.

New trends in philanthropy are shaping the landscape of giving, he explained, which makes it important to involve the Next Generation as early as possible, giving them a seat at the table and a voice on the agenda. Some of the trends that younger philanthropists may want to explore within a family project, including social entrepreneurship and venture philanthropy, can reinvigorate and add structure to the way the family typically supports beneficiaries.

Collaborating with other philanthropic families can also have benefits, such as greater impact thanks to pooled resources, as well as driving system change. He reminded attendees of the famous quote, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together," which aptly describes this approach to family philanthropy.

Transparency was also a key word of the evening, and one that the Next Generation is more accustomed to than their elders. This applies both to the family’s business as well as to its philanthropic giving, which now favors a more public approach.

Finally, families are well-positioned to leverage the resources and governance practices of the family enterprise to better serve beneficiaries and establish a long-term vision for strategic philanthropic giving. According to Mr du Roy, it is already the case as the over 4,000 families in the FBN network are all active, at some level, in philanthropic giving.
