On Tuesday, 28 April, Fondation de Luxembourg held the latest edition of its Philanthropy Adviser Event series for a group of senior wealth advisors and wealth planners. The evening featured keynote speaker Harriet Kwarteng, Director and Solicitor at KPMG Family Office and Private Client practice in London, who shared insights drawn from extensive research and interviews with philanthropists across four continents.

Drawing on research conducted in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, Harriet explored how major geopolitical and societal shifts are reshaping philanthropy globally. She described the emergence of a more strategic and collaborative approach to giving, as philanthropists increasingly seek to align their capital with long-term social impact objectives. While many individuals remain motivated to give generously, donors today are asking more complex questions around impact, governance, and accountability.
Her presentation also highlighted how philanthropy is often deeply rooted in personal and family history: many philanthropists are inspired by their own lived experiences and values, while generational differences increasingly influence the causes families choose to support. In this context, Harriet shared that advisers play an important role in helping families navigate differing perspectives and ensuring that all voices are heard throughout the philanthropic journey.
A recurring theme throughout the evening was the importance of combining emotional engagement with strategic thinking. Referring to a “head, heart, and hands” approach, Harriet Kwarteng emphasized that passion remains central to successful philanthropy, while clear structures can help transform philanthropic intentions into tangible impact. Participants also reflected on the growing importance of reporting and transparency within the sector, particularly as technological developments and artificial intelligence continue to shape expectations around impact measurement.
Harriet Kwarteng advises UK and international individuals and families on succession planning, philanthropy, and charitable giving. With a background in charity law, she works closely with private and corporate clients seeking to structure their philanthropy and create long-term social impact. She has been recognised by ePrivateclient as a “Top 35 under 35” Private Client adviser and was named “Up and Coming” in the Chambers High Net Worth Guide.
The Philanthropy Adviser Event conferences are regularly organized by the Fondation de Luxembourg to share the latest trends in the philanthropic sector with wealth advisors and private bankers.
